I am sure many of us did not imagine 2020 would turn out the way it did, this new global pandemic has caused many businesses to rethink how they do business, reach clients and grow. Digital Transformation used to be a topic you could ignore – something you can do later or create a budget for next year, because there was no need to fix a working business model right?

Lets look at a list of top businesses that have gone belly up in 2020

  • Edcon
  • Comair
  • Car Rentals – Hertz
  • Brook Brothers
  • Magazines – Cosmopolitan SA
  • Prada SA

Much much more, but this is not what this article is about. The idea here is that many household brands, companies hat held a significant portion of market have gone under and filled for bankruptcy.

There is still a significant number of companies that are holding on by a thin thread, however the writing is on the wall – some businesses were not built to weather this storm.

How about companies that have grown and made more money in 2020?

According to fortune.com – the following companies from the S&P500 (in no particular order) have made their investors a whole lot of money in 2020.

  1. Dexcom
  2. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals (no surprise there)
  3. Nvidia
  4. Paypal
  5. West Pharmaceuticals
  6. Amazon
  7. Ebay

Looking at both the lists – the message is not hard to get – online businesses have grown the most in 2020. I have not even mentioned the likes of Shopify and Zoom who have seen their stocks shoot up in 2020.

Remote Medicine

Remote medical diagnosis and treatment is going to be one of the fastest growing areas of development in the next couple of months. There is a need for patients to be able to see their doctors maybe through a video call or some automated screening method that would allow doctors and patients to connect remotely. We can even add in here – artificial intelligence and machine learning, where patients symptoms can be processed through artificial intelligence.

There are already many countries, such as China that are leading the way in the area of remote medicine, and this is an opportunity for some great entrepreneur to grab this idea and run with it to be a market leader here in Africa.

Doctors are still scrambling trying to meet patients in this crisis, why don’t you help them out and build them an app?

eCommerce

I mean, i think i don’t have to say much here, eBay, amazon, Shopify are booming in 2020 – just start selling things online. We have a lot of eCommerce Tutorials on our youtube channel to help you get started here if you want to build the store yourself.

Alternatively, you can check reputable website developers to build one for you.

Food Delivery

food delivery apps like Uber Eats are popping up everywhere, these apps are not too complicated to develop. You could ask yourself, “well is the market saturated?” I would say absolutely not. See food delivery apps, much like remote medicine apps – tend to be geo-focused. Meaning, an app can only serve certain areas really well, but not all areas perfectly. Uber eats is limited, it does not cover all restaurants and people residing in certain remote areas cannot access it.

There is a gap in the market for more focused and localised food delivery. I would even add that there is a gap in the market for restaurants to start developing their own apps. It would be much more beneficial for restaurants to manage their own food delivery, so they can connect to their clients. Start building contact lists and messaging them regularly, reminding them of their amazing specials and so forth.

Remote Learning

This list would not be complete without remote learning apps. This is suddenly become one of the leading requests we get. Gatherings are now dangerous and schools, governments etc were just not prepared.

Companies like Udemy have flourished over the years, but we need a different type of remote learning now. School education from a distance, teachers managing classrooms, assignments etc – from an online Learner Management system.

Online Payments

If you can figure out how to build a payment app. This would most likely be one of the most profitable businesses to get in to, because all these companies, businesses and entrepreneurs going online need payment systems. You can make money from all of them combined.

Think of mobile payments, non-credit cards payment systems (which are already saturated). Ways of doing payments cost effectively. All the current systems have high fees, users will flock to you – if you can supply the same services cheaper.
